![]() ![]() What we take, according to the author, is a journey from things to words, from words to categories, and from categories to metaphor and logic. Dictionaries and logarithmic tables become fascinating illustrations of human ingenuity. For the first third of the book: from drums and cave paintings to the use of the telegraph, each of the tools used to transmit information is examined both in its function and as an abstraction, or expression of a theoretical approach to information. ![]() ![]() These chapters raise some of the essential issues: how are messages transmitted with accuracy? Does writing change the way we think? How does language structure experience? Yet within these chapters the central dilemma of Gleick’s work rumbles like thunder in the background: information is not knowledge.Īdmirably, Gleick distills huge swaths of intellectual history to serve his theme, and he is witty as well as thorough as he does so. Initially we move from African drums to literacy and how writing changed our thinking to dictionaries and taxonomies of all kinds. For many chapters, the reader shares the excitement of discovery, of suddenly coming up over a hill to view a new horizon. James Gleick writes in his Prologue: “We can see now that information is what our world runs on: the blood and the fuel, the vital principle.” He has undertaken his task of writing the natural history of information with an audacious sense of adventure. ![]() ![]() Lovecraft strength definitely is better appreciated and with better effect on his shorter stories. It shows the amazing world living inside his head, there are very precious moments in the story and some suspense, but the over explanation and rationalization towards the Necronomicon, the tribute to Poe and others that feels to me the ambition for the story was way too big and failed not because he didn’t have the skills to paint the picture, but lacking the skills to wrap them in a good narration. What started as a suspense, horror story, turns into something cartoonish at times. The adventure on the finals parts are interesting and the scenery also, but the chronicle narration gets lost when Lovecraft goes all in in the myths, then there’s nothing reliable and you Im understand that the story was just a excuse to pain the world of the Old Ones and their story. He knew very well how things looked like, but the narration loses effect many times when he forces his myths every now and then. ![]() ![]() The next part of the story must has been Lovecraft in his top macabre imagination, creating a wonderful destination that loses hits effect in over description at times. Lovecraft on his peak, that is for good and for bad the beginning is quite exiting as a chronicle and the covert knowledge of the English language by Lovecraft helps to set the mood. It’s hard for me to give it 3 stars when there’s so much accomplished here, nevertheless, while this is H. ![]() ![]() ![]() Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Ralph Fitzgerald.Ben Chaplin as King Edward II / Sir Thomas Langley.Caris ( Charlotte Riley), a visionary woman, and her lover Merthin ( Tom Weston-Jones) build a community that stands up to the crown and the church.
